Kloof Street, the Company's Garden and the Nellie
Places and facts checked in October 2026, with sources at the bottom of the page. Opening hours and routes change: check before you go.
Gardens climbs from the top of the city centre towards Table Mountain and Lion's Head, between Tamboerskloof, Oranjezicht and Vredehoek. Kloof Street runs through the middle with its restaurants and shops, older houses and apartment blocks fill the streets around the Company's Garden, and the quieter upper slopes of Higgovale sit right under the mountain.
The Company's Garden
Laid out by the Dutch East India Company in 1652 and open to the public since 1848, the eight-hectare garden is open from 07:00 to 19:00 between September and March, and to 18:00 in winter.
Mount Nelson
The pink hotel, open since 1899 and set in eight acres of grounds, was ranked number 34 in The World's 50 Best Hotels 2026.
Museums and the Labia
The Iziko South African Museum, with its planetarium, the Iziko South African National Gallery, the South African Jewish Museum and the Cape Town Holocaust Centre are all in Gardens, as is the Labia, an independent art-house cinema.
Schools in the suburb
Public schools include Hoërskool and Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck on Kloof Street, Cape Town High School and Good Hope Seminary High School, founded in 1873. The Lycée Français du Cap and UCT's Michaelis School of Fine Art are also here.
MyCiTi on Kloof Street
MyCiTi buses stop at Lower Kloof, Welgemeend and Upper Kloof, and route 101 links Gardens with Vredehoek and the Civic Centre. Routes 106 and 107 reach Kloof Nek, start of the Lion's Head walk and of the free 110 shuttle to the cableway.
Kloof Street and Gardens Centre
Time Out named Kloof Street the coolest street in Africa in 2025, with Lifestyle on Kloof and the Longkloof precinct of independent stores. Gardens Centre, on Mill and Buitenkant, has Pick n Pay, Clicks and 870 parking bays.

What residents deal with
New water mains on the slopes
The City is spending about R10 million replacing old pipes behind repeated bursts in Gardens and Oranjezicht. Higgo Crescent and Summerseat are done; streets such as Myrtle and Jagersfontein had one-way traffic and short water cuts during the 2026 works.
Fire on the mountain
On 2 August 2026 a vegetation fire above Kloofnek Corner led to precautionary evacuations at the Lower Cableway Station and closed the Contour Path for a time. Upper Gardens and Higgovale back onto the national park.
A busy two-lane spine
Kloof Street has a single lane each way, street parking on both sides and no bus or cycle lanes, so MyCiTi buses, deliveries and evening diners all share the same road.
Short-term letting rules ahead
A draft City by-law would require every short-term rental to register, and homes available for short stays for more than 50 % of the year could pay commercial rates. Comment closed on 5 October 2026; it is still a proposal.
