De Waal Park, the reservoir and the City Farm

Places and facts checked in October 2026, with sources at the bottom of the page. Opening hours and routes change: check before you go.

Oranjezicht sits at the top of the City Bowl, directly under Table Mountain, next to Gardens and Vredehoek, with the Higgovale streets around Higgo Road on its western side. Quiet, leafy streets such as Upper Orange Street and Camp Street climb towards the mountain, and De Waal Park and the Molteno reservoir give the suburb a green centre.

Outdoors

De Waal Park

Opened to the public in 1895 on Camp Street and declared a National Monument in 1968, the park keeps its 1905 bandstand and 1898 Victorian fountain, and hosts Concerts in the Park.

Landmark

Molteno reservoir

Opened in 1881 to store Table Mountain spring water, the reservoir still supplies the city centre and the Company's Garden. The Graaff Electric Lighting Works beside it, commissioned in 1895, was Cape Town's first municipal power station.

Urban farm

Oranjezicht City Farm

A non-profit organic farm on a former bowling green at 87 Upper Orange Street, open to visitors on weekday mornings and Saturday mornings. Its well-known market trades separately at the V&A Waterfront.

Schools

Schools close by

St Cyprian's School is less than a kilometre away and Herzlia Highlands Primary about a kilometre, with the Kloof Street schools a short drive down the hill.

Getting around

MyCiTi route 103

The 103 Oranjezicht route links Upper Orange Street with Gardens and the Civic Centre in town. The airport is about 20 km away by road.

History

A view of the Oranje bastion

In 1708 the first owner named his farm Oranjezicht after its view of the Castle's Oranje bastion, and it stayed a farm for about two centuries; an old slave bell still survives on the site.

Coffee and tables

Ou Meul Oranjezicht

Bakery and café on the corner of Upper Orange Street and Montrose Avenue, known for pastries, croissants and breakfast.

Oranjezicht City Farm

The farm on Upper Orange Street grows and sells seasonal organic produce and runs educational visits.

Oranjezicht City Farm Market

The farm's food market, now in a timber barn at the V&A Waterfront, trades on Saturday and Sunday mornings and on Wednesday evenings outside June and July.

What residents deal with

Fire season on the slopes

Homes against the mountain sit next to fire-prone fynbos. In February 2025 a fire that started near Newlands spread to the City Bowl side and threatened Vredehoek, and in August 2026 a fire above Kloofnek Corner on Tafelberg Road needed aerial support.

Outside the nearest CID

Despite its name, the Oranje-Kloof City Improvement District covers Gardens and lower Tamboerskloof, with its southern edge along Orange, Hof and Camp Streets, so most of Oranjezicht sits outside its patrols.

The market on the move

The farm's market left its old Granger Bay site in December 2025, and in September 2026 the Waterfront said its new venue is temporary, so it is likely to move again once the Granger Bay development progresses.

Short-term letting rules ahead

A draft City by-law, open for comment until early October 2026, would require every short-term rental to register, with commercial rates from 1 July 2027 for homes available for more than 50 % of the year. It is still a proposal.
