Lion's Head slopes, Kloof Road and the rocky shore
Places and facts checked in October 2026, with sources at the bottom of the page. Opening hours and routes change: check before you go.
Bantry Bay sits on the western slopes of Lion's Head, squeezed between Sea Point and Clifton above a rocky stretch of coast. Victoria Road curves along the shore and Kloof Road runs higher up, with apartment blocks and a few large hotels on steep, short streets.
Once Botany Bay
The suburb was first called Botany Bay, after a garden planted here to grow medicinal herbs. The name changed during the First World War.
Darwin's plaque
A plaque on the shore marks a visit by Charles Darwin, who made observations here on the nature and origin of granite.
Lion's Head above
The suburb climbs the flank of Lion's Head, whose summit walk takes about an hour and is popular at full moon.
The Ellerman House collection
The hotel on Kloof Road holds more than 1,000 works covering over two centuries of South African art, hung throughout the house, villas and gardens.
MyCiTi stops
Routes 108, 109 and 118 stop at Koosani and Bantry Bay on Victoria Road, towards Sea Point and the city one way and Clifton, Camps Bay and Hout Bay the other. Routes 104 and 105 stop at Queens Beach, on the Sea Point side.

What residents deal with
Outside the Sea Point CID
The Sea Point City Improvement District stops near Queens and Tramway Roads, so Bantry Bay relies on City services and private security. The SFB's Safety and Cleaning Initiative says it aims to reach up to Bantry Bay as more residents sign up.
Holiday lets: rules and risks
A draft City by-law (August 2026) would make every short-term rental register, with commercial rates from July 2027 for homes let short-term for more than 50 % of the year. In April 2026 guests in a Bantry Bay penthouse reported being drugged and robbed, a case Sea Point police are investigating.
Heritage and building plans
The SFB planning committee comments on demolitions and changes to older buildings and has taken the City to court over at least one case. Expect objections on large rebuilds.
Cycle Tour closes Victoria Road
Each March the Cape Town Cycle Tour closes Victoria Road through Bantry Bay for most of the day, with parking limits on surrounding roads.
