Vredehoek climbs the slopes of Devil's Peak and Table Mountain above District Six, between Oranjezicht and Devil's Peak Estate, with the mountain park as its upper edge. Its streets, from Upper Buitenkant and Derry Street to Rabbi Mirvish Avenue, mix Art Deco blocks, newer apartments and family houses, most with a view over the City Bowl and the harbour.
Deer Park
A small Table Mountain National Park reserve at the top of the suburb, with a 40-minute loop, picnic spots and paths up to Tafelberg Road, Platteklip Gorge and Devil's Peak. It is a favourite with dog walkers.
Disa Park towers
Three cylindrical 17-storey towers, Blinkwater, Platteklip and Silverstroom, completed in 1969 by Bergamasco, Duncan & James. They are visible from most of the City Bowl.
Wash houses, kramats and Art Deco
The restored Wash House in Deer Park recalls the washerwomen who worked the Platteklip stream, and the kramat of Sayed Abdul Haq lies above the park. Daventry Court, Sherwood Court and Victory Court are among the suburb's Art Deco blocks.
Herzlia and Highlands House
United Herzlia Schools runs its high school, a primary and a pre-primary in the suburb. Highlands House, the Cape Jewish aged home, has operated here since 1920.
MyCiTi 101 and 111
Two MyCiTi loops link Vredehoek to Gardens and the Civic Centre, route 101 clockwise and route 111 anti-clockwise. Philip Kgosana Drive, on the suburb's northern edge, leads to the city centre and the southern suburbs.
DPVWatch
The Devil's Peak and Vredehoek neighbourhood watch counts just over 3,500 members, linked with SAPS, security companies and volunteer patrollers.
Coffee and tables
Deer Park Café
Garden café at the foot of Deer Park, with lawns, a play area for children and dogs welcome.
Shift Espresso Bar Deer Park
Coffee bar on Deer Park Drive, opening early for walkers heading up the mountain.
Persian Peacock
Persian and Middle Eastern restaurant on Upper Buitenkant Street.

What residents deal with
A CID put to the vote
Owners are voting on a proposed Vredehoek City Improvement District, with 24-hour vehicle patrols, cameras and a cleaning team. It needs 60 % of ratepayers by 31 October 2026 and could start on 1 July 2027 at the earliest.
Fire season on Devil's Peak
On 23 February 2026, four vegetation fires broke out near Devil's Peak and along Philip Kgosana Drive before helicopters contained them. In April 2021, a fire over Devil's Peak led to precautionary evacuations in Vredehoek.
Street homelessness
Homelessness is a recurring concern. The CID plan proposes daily outreach by an accredited provider and a social worker, rather than moving people from street to street, plus fencing at Plantation Park, Virginia Park and along Jutland Avenue.
Short-term letting rules ahead
A draft City by-law published in August 2026 would require every short-term rental to register, with commercial rates for homes available for more than 50 % of the year. Comments closed on 5 October 2026; it is still a proposal.
