Lion's Head, French avenues and Kloof Road
Places and facts checked in October 2026, with sources at the bottom of the page. Opening hours and routes change: check before you go.
Fresnaye climbs the lower slopes of Lion's Head between Signal Hill and Sea Point, which wraps around it to the north and west, with Bantry Bay to the south-west. Its steep, palm-lined avenues, many with French names, are lined with family houses, apartment blocks and penthouses looking out over the Atlantic.
Lion's Head
The 669 m peak rises directly behind the suburb. The walk to the top takes about an hour and is especially popular on full-moon evenings.
Table Mountain National Park on the doorstep
The upper streets back onto the national park's Lion's Head trails, and its slopes are a launching point for paragliders.
From Winterslust to Fresnaye
The slopes were once Winterslust, an 81 ha estate of vineyards and orchards bought in the early 1800s by Ryk Le Sueur, a lawyer of Huguenot descent. That French heritage lives on in names like Avenue Fresnaye and Avenue des Huguenots.
Sheltered and high up
Fresnaye is one of the parts of Cape Town best protected from the summer south-easter. Head Road, Top Road and the upper end of Avenue Fresnaye are known for their sea views.
Schools nearby
Families look to Sea Point Primary, Ellerton Primary and Sea Point High nearby, Camps Bay High over the hill, or the French School of Cape Town.
MyCiTi 105 and quick drives
MyCiTi route 105 links Sea Point and Fresnaye with the Civic Centre. By car, Sea Point is about four minutes away, the CBD about ten and the airport about 25 via the N2.
What residents deal with
Kloof Road still closed
Kloof Road, the mountain road towards Kloof Nek and Camps Bay, has been shut between Kloof Nek Road and Round House Road since storm damage in September 2023, even to cyclists and walkers. Repairs began in March 2026 and the City expects to reopen it by mid-December 2026.
Resurfaced avenues
From 29 January to the end of February 2026 the City resurfaced roads across the area, including Ocean View Drive and Alexandra Avenue, with kerbs, manholes and stormwater drains fixed along the way.
An active ratepayers' association
The Sea Point, Fresnaye and Bantry Bay Ratepayers and Residents Association (SFB) is volunteer-run and funded by members; it comments on heritage and planning applications and adds safety and cleaning projects.
Draft rules for holiday rentals
Under the City's draft Short-Term Letting By-Law, published in August 2026, any home listed on Airbnb or similar platforms would need a City registration number, and those available for more than 50 % of the year could pay commercial rates. Comments closed on 5 October 2026; the by-law is not yet in force.
