Lion's Head, Kloof Nek and the top of Kloof Street
Places and facts checked in October 2026, with sources at the bottom of the page. Opening hours and routes change: check before you go.
Tamboerskloof climbs the slopes of Lion's Head and Signal Hill on the western side of the City Bowl, between Gardens, the Bo-Kaap and the pass at Kloof Nek. Steep residential streets of houses and low apartment blocks run up from the restaurants of Kloof Street to the start of Kloof Nek Road, with Table Mountain filling the view to the south.
Lion's Head on the doorstep
Lion's Head rises directly above the suburb, and several Table Mountain trails start from Tafelberg Road at Kloof Nek, where parking is free.
Kloof Nek Road
Built in 1848 and described as one of South Africa's oldest roads, it climbs from Kloof Street over the pass between Table Mountain and Lion's Head to Camps Bay. Tafelberg Road, the way to the cableway, branches off at the top.
German school and local primaries
The German International School, founded in 1883, is on Bay View Avenue and teaches in German and English streams up to matric and the Abitur. Tamboerskloof Primary and the Jan van Riebeeck primary and high schools are also in the area.
MyCiTi 106 and 107
The Civic Centre to Camps Bay routes 106 and 107 run up Kloof Nek Road and stop at the top, where a free shuttle runs from Lower Tafelberg Road to the cableway. Kloof Street has the Lower Kloof, Welgemeend and Upper Kloof stops.
Kloof Street
The suburb's lower edge meets Kloof Street, home to Lifestyle on Kloof and a long run of cafés and restaurants. Time Out ranked it 22nd among the world's coolest streets in 2025, and first in Africa.
The valley of drums
The name means drum valley: lookouts here beat drums to warn Dutch farmers that a ship was approaching the harbour.
Coffee and tables
Kyoto Garden Sushi
Sashimi-focused Japanese restaurant on Kloof Nek Road, rated by Time Out among the city's best.
The Power and the Glory
Corner bistro on Kloof Nek and Burnside Roads, a café by day with The Black Ram bar opening in the evening.
Beleza
Portuguese and Italian-inspired restaurant on the corner of Burnside and Kloof Nek Road.
The Blue Café
Neighbourhood café for breakfast, light lunches and home baking.
What residents deal with
Trucks on Kloof Nek Road
After years of heavy-vehicle crashes on the steep descent, the City introduced a truck-only lane and a compulsory stop on the citybound side in July 2026. Camera checks in July and August found about four in five heavy vehicles complying, and a permanent enforcement camera still awaits approval.
A CID below, a watch above
The lower part of the suburb, up to Kloof Nek Road, falls in the Oranje-Kloof City Improvement District, which began a new five-year term on 1 July 2026 with 24-hour foot patrols and cameras. The rest relies on the voluntary Tamboerskloof Neighbourhood Watch, which is expanding its camera network from 80 to 120 units.
Fire on the mountain
Vegetation fires on the slopes are a real risk: in August 2026 a fire above Kloofnek Corner on Tafelberg Road needed aerial support to bring under control.
Short-term letting rules ahead
A draft City by-law, open for comment from August to early October 2026, would make every short-term rental register, and charge commercial rates from 1 July 2027 on homes available for short-term letting for more than 50 % of the year. It is still a proposal.
